okay, new subject today, because i had to get rid of my original michael jackson post - it was soooo offensive (working title was, “help! MJ tickled my bum at neverland ranch!”)...on to greener pastures for moi…let’s talk about books? okay? yeah, so one of the greatest advantages of the internet is that finally, after decades of being presented with only the opportunity to make money, publishers have been usurped by a hot sludge of free books going online…these are original works by authors who just want people to read what they’ve written, without the need to collect a dollar bill from every man, woman and child (note to self: do not use the word “child” to segue to original MJ posting entiteld, ‘help! mj tickled my bum at neverland ranch’)…

the best free book of the year? in my opinion, it’s a nerds-only treatise on social network analysis by robert hanneman and mark riddle (both members of insna) called, “introduction to social network analysis.”…now, if you ever wanted to understand where companies like elGoog came up with their original page-rank algorithm, or why linkedin and the other online networking sites almost work, you’ve got to understand how sna really works, and what it’s all about…from the authors, “This on-line textbook introduces many of the basics of formal approaches to the analysis of social networks. The text relies heavily on the work of Freeman, Borgatti, and Everett (the authors of the UCINET software package).

i’ve interviewed stan wasserman before, and as the papa smurf of modern sna he certainly helps shed some light…but for those who want to go deeper, who want to say stuff at parties like “i love corn, and no, i’m not wild about ‘revenge of the sith’ - but what about eigenvector analysis?” (note to self: do not use the word “corn” to somehow manufacture a segue back to the original posting entitled, “help! mj tickled my bum at neverland ranch!”), there’s this huge book available online, for free, and it’s very, very well done…read it, print it, just love it and hold it close and say to yourself, “this would never happen in china! it’s like fahrenheit 451 over there!

Some similar nonsense, if you like that kind of thing:
