okay, first you gotta bookmark this pagewhat’s it all about? these guys david teten and scott allen (some good notes are at their fast company column) have been nearing completion of a new book called “the virtual handshake” and since i’ve known dave for a little while, he was kind enough to send over a pre-production review copy….though i’ve yet to write my real review, all i can tell you at this point is that it’s well written, thoroughly researched and translates some very heady concepts into very plain language (great news for wicked stupid people who have trouble reading business books, no worries about that fustian business language crap in this text!)…also turns all the ‘online interaction’ stuff into a set of actionable ideas, like a clear framework for thinking about what you can do with what you know and who you know…

so if you’re like, “virtual handshake? but i’ve got ocd and don’t like to touch other people,” then go wash your hands again and relax (or clean something)…it’s an honest effort to demystify a whole lotta stuff for the masses (wow! does that help or what?)..from the site, here’s what craig newmark of craigslist has to say, “The Virtual Handshake is a down-to-earth explanation of how people really connect on the ‘net, and how to make that happen for yourself. David and Scott turn the abstract theory into practical action you can use successfully.“…now to add to that, david teten is a member of insna, and has taken great care to solicit feedback from academics as he and scott turned their ideas about networking theory into common language text…there’s a lotta deep thought that’s been carefully summarized, reviewed, analyzed and digested for you - and having complex theory pre-chewed really does aid in digestion (ever watched a presidential debate?)…

…but what i’m really excited about is how the book is gonna work…in short, it’s an effort to be permanently-relevant by integrating the book with a content driven blog and interactive reader’s guide (a membership based resource within the main site) to make sure that new resources are incorporated in the form of a living document and archive (which also means that expired resources are buried, etc)…the community around the book is likely to become as valuable - or possibly more valuable - than the text itself (over time), and i’m eager to see how it all plays out…i’ll be back in touch with a much more formal review in the near future…

if you’re interested, there’s a free excerpt at the blog, also a free sample chapter...and there’s a lotta info at the main site for the upcoming release (including a link to give them your money in a pre-order)…yeah, that’s about it, gotta run…
