so remember when i talked about star38 a while back? the owner got some death threats from the hacker community (hackers have been doing this for a long time, they call it “orange boxing“)…whole Star38 thing turned ‘commercial only‘ and now caters to law enforcement (as in, no longer open to the public)…but whatever came of that larger market for callerID spoofing? there were a bunch of firms scrambling for customers…then something strange happened, a bunch of them started going up for sale (e.g. take a look at this offer)

if you’re like, ‘callerID spoofing? what’s that? will i have to do breathing exercises?” then let me offer the peter rabbit version: a spoofer calls a central system (or uses a web login) and then (typically) specifies where he’s calling from (the real number), where he’s calling to (the real number) and then specifies both the fake name and fake number that he would like to have displayed on the other end, on the caller id unit…strange that it’s not completely and totally illegal, but hey, have you taken a look at what’s available over the counter at your local pharmacy?

…but why bug out? according to fcc spokeswoman june taylor as of this past january, the services are just not illegal, period…so at any rate, now that you can’t use star38 at all (ever) unless you’re in law enforcement, let’s take a look at the other offerings that are still standing…note that all of these vendors offer services for about 5 to 10 cents per minute, very few charge set up fees, and a few offer the ability to record calls…smarmy stuff indeed…

here’s the lineup: 1) CovertCall; 2)Camophone; 3) TeleSpoof; 4) SpoofTel; 5) PI Phone and 6) US Tracers …go see ‘em for yourself, it’s terrifying stuff…

oh, but did i mention the concern that i really have about this crap? with a callerID spoof, you might be able to fake a person’s number and call their cell phone and gain access to a cell phone voice message box…most are set to not require passwords unless you create one, and so most just start spitting back messages without a password…now how whack is THAT?????? i’ve never even thought of actually trying it - so please let me know if i’m wrong, or if i should run and set a new password…

Some similar nonsense, if you like that kind of thing:
