mostly research stuff
as a soi-disant research wonk (all the way down to bad hair), i’ve spent years collecting and organizing niche internet resources to support many oddball projects…only to discover that bragging about my stellar finds in the worlds of demographic research, ad hoc wireless sensory networking or pediatric otolaryngology consistenly draw reactions like, “whatever dave, do you want thai or indian? and please don’t wear that hat…”
…my main gripe in doing research through mega-directories (think yahoo, business.com et al) is that quite often, as the french would say, they suck ass (pronounced, ‘zay sook-uss’)…if i’m doing research on the market for some pharmaceutical therapy, i don’t wanna see links to every damned drug company - i’ll do that part - i just want meta-sites, the overstuffed gateways to the industry..but i couldn’t really ever find one comprehensive guide of this sort…dmoz is full of dead links and just way too big, and major industry and business directories are so hopped up on ads that sometimes i get all teary-eyed, choked up, wondering what the hell happened to the ‘information wants to be free’ mantra of these folks…so yeah, i decided to just go ahead and start rebuilding my own online to share with other folks, it’s the passingnotes.com research web guide…also includes special sections for articles about research and training pieces (like these ones for primary research)…
all that you need to navigate is a computer and intuitive judgment (aka faith) - and a common sense approach to the build…for example, if you’re looking for automotive industry research, you don’t have to keep drilling, you just gotta find the list of resources that relate to things that move with wheels, on air or by water…i really get annoyed when i see these mega directory sites breaking up categories ad infinitum to multiply advertising revenue opportunities, that just pisses me off…it’s still sorta under construction (growing, new sub-cats), but i would greatly appreciate any and all user input…if you’d like to see a new category, or you’re missing something when you look at it, please let me know… thanks.
this blog is mostly safe for work, though i sometimes throw around a 'fuck' or two. you'll find a bunch of my articles from CI Magazine, SCIP online, other research pieces and some other crap. enjoy. there's lost of content here related to getting information about, around, from and through people and organizations...
