mostly research stuff
“A word to the wise ain’t necessary…it’s the stupid ones who need the advice.” - Bill Cosby
according to wired news, friendster has completely sold out… when the site first launched, the laity were putting up bogus accounts for pets, politicians or often completely made-up people. friendster was perturbed, and quickly pumped in new rules and purged the system (oh btw, almost all 12 thousand of those fakesters now live on at pretendster…but now, in a bold and avaricious attempt to prove that these sites might one day earn play money, friendster has sold spots to dreamworks to promote the will ferrell movie ‘anchorman.’ users can link to the movie characters (e.g. ron burgundy, registration required to look at this) …and their logic? because dreamworks owns the characters, they are not fictitious. (is that fustian? is it even logic?)
here’s the bullshit that came out of friendster’s mouth, courtesy of the wired piece, “What Friendster is doing with these movie-character profiles is actually a brand-new paradigm in media promotion,” Friendster spokeswoman Lisa Kopp said. “We are working directly with a number of production houses and movie studio partners to create film-character profiles, or ‘fan’ profiles, that allow our users to share their enthusiasm about the film with their friends.”
i’m sorry - you’re doing what? this is, in my estimation, the most egregious violation of user trust that i’ve seen to date on any of these sites. let me ask you this, friendster, how about having your top corporate flibbertigibbets (read: executives) pick up the phone and personally call every single registered user to apologize? ….yeah, just one more reason to a) never set up on friendster or b) take down whatever you’ve already got up there… sad, sad stuff.
this blog is mostly safe for work, though i sometimes throw around a 'fuck' or two. you'll find a bunch of my articles from CI Magazine, SCIP online, other research pieces and some other crap. enjoy. there's lost of content here related to getting information about, around, from and through people and organizations...

The link between Kevin Bacon and the rest of the world appears to be well documented. I think I have DreamWorks and freinds-terd in 2 or 3 degrees through NBC. They all seem to meet in the same board room anyway.

I didn’t feel violated because it was so obviously a way of marketing a movie. Exactly what trust was violated in your opinion?

well, for starters, let’s look at their ‘terms of service,’ which says: “Non Commercial Use by Members. The Web site is for the personal use of individual Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial endeavors. Organizations, companies, and/or businesses may not become Members and should not use the Service or the Web site for any purpose.”…then section 5B under “Content Posted on Site” states, “Your profile must describe you, an individual person. Examples of inappropriate profiles include, but are not limited to, profiles that purport to represent an animal, place, inanimate object, fictional character, or real individual who is not you.” …those are just a few starting points for consideration. then of course, there’s their own tagline in ‘about us,’ ” Friendster is an online community that connects people through networks of friends.” - are your favorite movie characters your friends? i loved rushmore! …but bill murray’s character isn’t my friend, nor is margaret…sorry. they’ve overstepped their boundaries and have turned their site into crap, just a marketing database at this point. zero credibility.
