okay, combing is old news. in plain english, it’s a term a lotta researchers use to describe the process of ripping off the hard work of other researchers…or more elegantly stated, “avoid wheel-reinvention by searching for other well developed resource repositories.” this is quite common for most researchers who spend a lot of time looking for great collections of industry/topic/item specific collections (from pharma to industrial to whatever else one might need)…but when it comes to the world of librarians, it’s like a whole new take on the concept of meta-combing…

librarians have begun to seriously organize their own librarian web sites, blogs and similar resources - and it’s getting hotter than little ‘nony ryder’s pilfering video - so much so that even dmoz has developed a new category within the open directory project to house all of these librarian type resources. good news? you bet. here’s a run down of some starting points to consider if you wish to look over these growing meta-collections:

start here: at www.dmoz.org, home of the ODP (open directory project), this listing runs over 400, nearly 500 and growing - all library and librarian related blogs - http://www.dmoz.org/Reference/Libraries/Library_and_Information_Science/Weblogs/ - note that this sub-category breaks out further into another 200-plus sites (e.g. for collaborative and personal blogs)…this is the longest listing i’ve found yet…of course, big is not always better (ever seen ‘willow’?)

http://librariansindex.blogspot.com/ - found this gem through LIS, this is a rapidly expanding collection of librarian blogs. what’s nice is that they appear to keep an eye on what goes up there…

and if you care at all about the world around you, take a deep, soulful and teary-eyed look at: www.libdex.com - the library index (a project which is arguably the greatest undertaking of its kind), building a directory of over 18 thousand (and growing) libraries around the world…also: something fairly new to their site http://www.libdex.com/weblogs.html - this is the LIBDEX site that hosts librarian related weblogs, and allows for any user to build a library related blog

http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/RSS.htm - this is a small, growing list of library-specific RSS feeds, still kinda small for my super-size-me tendencies, but seems to be getting some positive attention

…and you can also keep track of library technology by following the open source systems for libraries blog: http://www.oss4lib.org/

honestly, there are so many good library and librarian websites and blogs to consider that i’d rather avoid presenting any for specific consideration…you’ll really have to be the judge, based on your personal needs…one funny one that caught my attention, quite irreverent, but with some serious info: http://www.nexgenlibrarian.net/

Some similar nonsense, if you like that kind of thing:
